Programs

Supporting Southside Virginia through adoptions, spay/neuter, education and more

The Southside SPCA offers several key programs & services supporting animal rescue, adoption, and spay/neuter services in our 12-county service area. These services are free or low cost in most cases thanks to the support of our donors and volunteers.

Adoption Services

We believe every animal in our care is capable of thriving in the right home and family. Our adoption process matches pets with the best environment possible and matches pet-seekers with the animal that best fits their specific needs.

Pet-seekers can adopt animals at our facility in Farmville or at our PetSmart Adoption stand in Chesterfield.

Spay & Neuter Program

The Southside SPCA Spay & Neuter Program has drastically reduced euthanasia and abandonment rates in Southside Virginia. Over the past eight years, we have facilitated spaying and neutering of more than 17,000 animals as well as reducing euthanizations at county pounds by nearly 90%.

We offer this service to pet owners at low cost through the support of donations. The Southside SPCA partners with local veterinary clinics to perform these procedures. In addition, we attempt to match pets and their families with the right facility based on cost and location.

Homebound Hounds Program

Our Homebound Hounds Program is one of the Southside SPCA’s most successful and longest-running programs. It provides an innovative approach to saving puppies in our rural service area. Each year, the program saves more than 250 puppies from Southside Virginia while also meeting the demand for mixed-breed puppies in other areas.

Homebound Hounds focuses on rescuing mixed-breed puppies from local pounds and finding them forever homes in cooperation with partnering agencies. We rescue, temporarily house, vaccinate and transport puppies to the other rescue facilities for adoption. We are a conduit between county animal controls and other rescues, providing a lifesaving service that is truly one of a kind.

Education Programs & Services

Educating the public in Southside Virginia about the importance of spaying and neutering their pets has done as much to reduce pet overpopulation and euthanasia rates in our service area as our spay and neuter programs themselves.

Through our website, newsletters, printed flyers, local events, fundraisers, and the media are used in our education campaign and we are continually looking for ways to reach even more of the public. In addition, we host educational guest speakers at our annual Holiday Donation Drive in Farmville.

We also use trained volunteer speakers who are available to appear at clubs, churches, and schools. Topics of discussing include responsible pet care, the importance of spaying and neutering, and the work of the Southside SPCA. This is a free service, though donations are encouraged to support our work on behalf of the animals. If you are interested in having one of our volunteers speak to your group, please contact us.
