Spay & Neuter Program
Working to eliminate euthanasia of healthy animals in Southside Virginia
Facts about euthanasia rates in Southside Virginia and the Southside SPCA’s Spay & Neuter Program:
- When the Southside SPCA was founded in 1975 almost 100 percent of the thousands of animals taken in each year by the 12 Southside Virginia County animal controls were euthanized.
- We began promoting the importance of spaying and neutering to pet owners in Southside Virginia soon after the Southside SPCA was founded. We have continued and expanded these efforts since then.
- Over 65,000 dogs and cats were spayed and neutered through the program since 1975, of which over 17,000 were spayed and neutered since 2016.
- Between 2012 and 2021, the program has contributed to a 49.2 percent decrease in the number of animals taken in by the county animal controls and a 88.1 percent decrease in the number of animals euthanized by these same controls.
