Spay/Neuter Program
When the Southside SPCA opened in 1975, euthanasia rates at the county pounds were almost 100%. Ever since then, our Low-cost Spay and Neuter Program has been growing more and more robust, thanks to the generous donations of supporters like you!
- During the last 8 years, we have spayed and neutered over 17,000 animals.
- We achieved a 59% increase in spayings and neutering between 2016 – 2023
- We have documented an 88.1% decrease in euthanizations at county pounds between 2012 – 2021.
We need your support! Please consider making a donation to our Spay and Neuter Program so that we can continue to make progress on reducing the number of unwanted, neglected, abandoned, and homeless dogs and cats in Southside Virginia.

Pet Overpopulation
A mind-boggling number of healthy animals must be put to death in the U.S. each year. Approximately 12 million cats and dogs will end up in U.S. animal pounds or shelters this year. Only 30 percent will be reclaimed by their owners or find new homes. According to the latest research and data, around 920,000 shelter animals are euthanized each year, including 390,000 dogs and 530,000 cats. The rest are left to die on the roadside or from starvation, exposure, disease, and abuse.
