We feared a significant reduction in adoptions when COVID forced us to begin conducting all of our dog adoptions at our shelter in Meherrin following suspension of adoptions at the PetSmart in Richmond. We were pleasantly surprised when adoptions actually increased as those seeking companionship and the outdoors took advantage of the opportunity to adopt while getting out and enjoying a drive in the country.
Conducting adoptions at the shelter almost every day, however, presented its own problems. On an average day the shelter is a very busy place from sun-up to sun-down with staff and volunteers occupying almost every square foot of space caring for as many as 80 animals – leaving no room for the quiet and privacy needed for adopters to speak with the adoption counselors while getting to know their forever companion-to-be. After evaluating several options, we concluded that the best solution was to build a small “Adoption Cottage” that would be affordable, provide the quiet and privacy needed for adoptions, and not take up space in the current shelter buildings.
When completed in February, the Adoption Cottage was all that we hoped for and more. It is sun-filled, comfortable, quiet, and free from the distractions of daily shelter operations. We are very pleased that it has been so well received by the many families and individuals who have enjoyed the enhanced adoption experience offered by the new addition to our shelter. Our dog adoptions will continue to be conducted at the Cottage while we continue to navigate the disruptions brought on by COVID. Once our dog adoptions resume at PetSmart, we will continue to offer adoptions at the Cottage for those who find it more convenient or prefer a more private adoption experience.
