Following is an update on the current effect the COVID-19 public health crisis is having on Southside SPCA. We appreciate your continued support during these challenging times!
Shelter Operations
Our shelter continues to operate during its regular hours, and our staff is following established public health guidelines, practicing social-distancing, and wearing face coverings. Staff members are working long hours as our intake of homeless and abandoned dogs and cats has increased over the last few months. Local animal controls also are seeing an increase in activity, and our daily rescue work continues non-stop. Further increasing the workload on our staff, our shelter volunteer program remains suspended until further notice, and we miss the valuable assistance of our dedicated volunteers. The shelter is once again near capacity, and we are seeing an increase in the number of animals requiring medical treatment. Adoptions remain steady but have decreased from the very high levels of spring and early summer.
Adoptions
Adoptions of dogs and cats continue to take place at our main shelter by appointment (434-736-9595, info@southsidespca.org). Our knowledgeable adoptions staff provides a safe and efficient experience for visitors to the shelter.
Our Saturday dog adoption program at the Chesterfield PetSmart on Car Mia Way remains discontinued until further notice due to store policy during the ongoing COVID-19 public health crisis. Cat adoptions continue on a daily basis during store hours at PetSmart (1276 Car Mia Way, Chesterfield). If you are interested in adopting a dog or cat please contact us!
Tailwaggers Thrift Store
Our Keysville thrift store, Tailwaggers, has re-opened for business. For the safety of our volunteers and patrons, we are following all prescribed social distancing and health guidelines. Tailwaggers continues to provide an important retail service to the Keysville area, and all proceeds directly benefit the shelter’s animals. We continue to rely on our supporters for the donation of used goods of all varieties. Please consider us after your next garage sale or house cleaning project! After hours donations can be left at the front door and will be secured daily. Tailwaggers is located at 39 Railroad Ave. in Keysville and is open Thursday and Friday 10:00 to 3:00 and Saturday 10:00 to 2:00.
We Need Your Support!
Your shelter continues to need your support during these uncertain times. While our work to rescue animals in need and place them in loving homes continues at a steady pace, our ability to hold outreach and fundraising events has been severely curtailed during the pandemic. We need your continued support! As the economic uncertainties continue and conditions change daily, we anticipate the need for donations of bleach, cleaning supplies, cat litter (non-clumping), and dog and cat food. Your donation now will make a difference in our ability to care for the homeless dogs and cats in our shelter. Please consider a monetary donation or a donation of goods. Click here to make a monetary donation now!
If you are in the Farmville area, our friends at the Holiday Inn Express & Suites (404 Sunchase Blvd.) have agreed to be a local drop off point for donations. Of course, donations also can be dropped off at the main shelter or shipped to: Southside SPCA, 7352 Patrick Henry Highway, Meherrin, VA 23954.
As ever, we are so grateful to our many supporters! We wish you and your loved ones good health and safety, now and always.
