Accomplishments in 2021
We are excited to report that with the help of 145 animals spayed and neutered with donations made through Ray Elliott’s 2021 Ruff-N-It Spay/Neuter Campaign, a record 2,248 Southside Virginia animals were spayed and neutered in 2021 as a result of our spay/neuter and outreach programs. This is also the fourth straight year that over 2,000 animals were spayed and neutered through our partnership with Ray and the support of our donors.
The numbers for 2021:
-Rescued a total of 914 animals, which is 81 less than the number of animals rescued in 2020. Of the 914 animals rescued in 2020, 537 were transferred from euthanizing animal control facilities to our shelter.
-Adopted 860 animals into good homes or transferred to other non-euthanizing organizations, which is 144 less than the number of animals adopted or transferred in 2020. Those still with us will remain in our care until good homes can be found.
-Spayed and neutered 2,248 animals compared to 2,009 animals spayed and neutered in 2020 (both figures include animals spayed and neutered with donations made through Ray Elliott’s 2021 Ruff-N-It Spay/Neuter Campaign).
-Cared for an average of 70 animals each day at our shelter.
-Provided medical treatment (other than spay/neuter vaccinations) for 52 animals.
-Provided 37 low-income pet owners with food and/or supplies to enable them to keep their pets.
Words cannot adequately express our appreciation and gratitude for the support we received during 2021 from so many generous and compassionate donors. You truly are making a difference in the lives of Southside Virginia’s homeless animals!
Accomplishments in 2020
Your generous donations enabled us to continue to accomplish great things for the Southside Virginia animals.
Total income declined by approximately seven percent in 2020 compared to 2019. Total expenditures also declined in 2020 from $651,129 in 2019 to $618,169 last year due to reductions in shelter, vehicle, medical, and fundraising expenses resulting from COVID-related closures and social distancing restrictions. Of this amount, $573,040 (92%) was spent directly on our animal welfare programs (rescue, shelter, adoption, medical, etc.). Of the remainder, $25,200 (5%) was spent on administration and general expenses (accounting, insurances, office supplies, taxes, etc.), and $19,929 (3%) was spent on fundraising (printing, mailing, T-shirts, caps, etc.). We are very happy to report that despite the reductions in income and expenses, we did not have to turn away a single animal in need last year due to a shortage of funds or volunteers and staff.
By keeping our administration and fundraising costs as small as possible we are able to devote more of our financial resources to directly benefit the animals. Few non-profits of any kind spend such a small percentage of their income on administration and fundraising. This is because the Southside SPCA operates mostly with volunteers. Our animal welfare programs are conducted and managed mainly by volunteers while administration and fundraising are conducted and managed entirely volunteers.
