Deserving Senior Is Home At Last!

Imagine living day in and day out having to share a fenced yard with approxi-mately 30 other dogs. You would try to find a place to lie down, or grab a quick bite to eat, even get a little exercise. Now imagine a pack of frustrated and hungry members that push you around because you’re a senior. Your life is chaos and you have no way to escape. This is the life that Sandy lived.   The Southside SPCA found her on a property with 94 dogs. She was hidden under a worn out wooden deck, afraid to draw attention for fear of retaliation from the pack. Her ears bore scars from fights she had lost, her ribs could be felt from not having enough to eat, and her mouth was sore from severe dental disease. But most of all she was tired. It was a tired that went straight down to her bones.   We took her back to our shelter that day. We laid her upon a throne of comfy bedding, filled her bowl with soft food, and whispered promises of a trip to the vet the next morning.   After a much-needed dental cleaning, tooth extractions, and other veterinarian care, Sandy was finally pain free. Over the next few weeks the weight began to creep up. She spent many days just catching up on sleep, and other days were spent enjoying the hugs and pets from volunteers and staff. This sweet senior was finally living the life she had always hoped for… but we knew there was even more in store for her. The best was yet to be.   After telling her story on our Facebook page, Friends of Southside SPCA, we received an application. Not just any application: a family that wanted to give her a retirement home on a picturesque farm, with lots of love, and another hound as a companion. She would finally be part of a family, sleeping inside on soft beds, and be showered with affection!   Sandy, renamed Shelby, had a rough road to happiness, but now it is smoothly paved. In the end, her road led her to be “home at last”!  Photo of Sandy on the right with her new loving family.
